WELCOME TO THE VANDEGRIFT FFA
WHAT IS FFA?

FFA is a cocurricular organization that is available through the agricultural sciences department at Vandegrift FFA. Because many activities and opportunities directly coincide with instruction and experiences that occur in the classroom,  students must be enrolled in an ag class to be eligible for membership.

There are many opportunities to get involved including:

LDEs
LDEs or Leadership Development Events focus on creating situations for members to demonstrate their abilities in public speaking, decision making, communication and their knowledge of agriculture and the FFA organization. Team and individual events are used to reinforce what is taught in agricultural science classrooms.
All LDE events have elimination rounds at the district and area before the state level competition. Vandegrift FFA has remained highly competitive in ldes as well. Some of the teams that have advanced to the area level of competition include: Radio Broadcasting, Creed Speaking, Jr./Sr. Skills, and Public Relations. Last year our Public Relations team advanced to the state contest representing one of the top 20 teams in the entire state of Texas. LDEs take place during the fall semester.

CDEs
CDEs stand for career development events. There are over 24 recognized FFA CDE teams to participate on. Teams/opportunities will be offered based on interest and advisor expertise. Vandegrift FFA CDE teams typically include vet science, floriculture, livestock judging, entomology and more.  Over the past several years Vandegrift FFA has built a strong cde program. The vet science cde team advanced to the state competition last spring and were state champions. They will travel to Indianapolis this fall to compete at the national contest where they will compete against the other vet science state champions nationwide! Those interested in participating must meet UIL eligibility requirements and commit to required practices and competitions. CDE events have area elimination rounds before the state level competition and the competitive season occurs during the spring semester.

SAEs
Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs) give students a well-rounded view of career opportunities by exposing members to real world hands-on agricultural experiences conducted outside of the classroom. An SAE is a work experience that is created and carried out by the student. This part of the integrated model gives students a chance to explore the career areas that interest them. The SAE must relate to the field of agriculture but can be as diverse as food science to wildlife management to experiments in animal nutrition. Popular SAEs at Vandegrift include working at local agrelated businesses and raising livestock. Our barn facility is currently shared with Cedar Park FFA and is located next to Cedar Park Middle School. There we house livestock projects such as lambs, goats, hogs, and cattle.  The  program was included on last year’s bond with a new ag project facility in  the works for Vandegrift to be built on the Grandview Hills Elementary property.

Leadership
There are many leadership opportunities in the FFA as well. The organization is lead by a group of student officers that are elected by the membership each year and installed at the annual FFA banquet.  Student officers are responsible for planning and implementing the chapter program of activities including: meetings, socials, fundraisers, and events. Other leadership opportunities including serving on a committee or serving as a voting delegate.

Service

The FFA chapter serves the community in various ways throughout the year including community cleanups, food drives, assisting with sponsor activities, Blue Santa, and more. This goes directly with the ‘living to serve’ portion of our motto.

Scholarship
The FFA has many scholarship opportunities available. These exist on a local level through the support of our Alumni Organization. Each year they raise funds to support the post-secondary education of our senior members that meet eligibility requirements. Over the last 4 years, the alumni has awarded a total of $34,500. There are also opportunities that exist on a statewide level through the Texas FFA, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Justin Boots, and more.
